Liability concerns covered harm to others.
Auto liability generally concerns covered bodily injury or property damage for which you are responsible. It is different from protection for damage to your own vehicle. Ask about the limits shown in the proposal and discuss the circumstances you want to plan for.
Collision and comprehensive concern different vehicle damage.
Collision generally addresses damage from a collision. Comprehensive, sometimes called other-than-collision, concerns covered events such as theft, hail, or contact with an animal. Deductibles and exclusions apply. Ask how each is described in the actual policy rather than assuming every kind of damage is included.
Use the quote as a comparison worksheet.
Write the coverage names down the left side and the proposed limits and deductibles beside them. Give optional benefits their own lines. This helps prevent an inexpensive quote with fewer protections from looking equivalent to another proposal.
- Bodily injury and property damage liability limits.
- Uninsured and underinsured motorist provisions.
- Collision and comprehensive deductibles, if selected.
- Any medical payments, rental, or roadside options in the proposal.
Ask before changing the vehicle’s protection.
If the car is financed or leased, check the agreement and ask Todd about the coverage you need to discuss. If your driving or vehicle use changes, raise that too. Only the insurer’s issued policy and confirmed changes determine coverage; this guide is an orientation for your conversation.
Questions before you start.
Does liability repair my own car?
Liability and coverage for damage to your own vehicle have different roles. Ask Todd to identify which part of your proposal addresses each example you care about.
