Review what changed before the next season.

A farm coverage review works best when it starts with the operation as it is today. Use a location-by-location checklist rather than assuming last year’s description still fits.

Walk through each location on paper.

Write down the buildings at each premises and what happens there. Include a residence, storage buildings, workshops, rented ground, and other locations used in the operation. Flag a building that is vacant or has a new purpose; the change may matter even if nothing was bought or sold.

Use four categories for changes.

A short summary gives Todd a useful starting point. Keep detailed contracts and asset records private until you agree on a suitable way to provide them.

  • Property: buildings added, renovated, sold, rented, or used differently.
  • Equipment: purchases, leases, borrowing, sharing, or off-site work.
  • People and activities: workers, visitors, new services, or custom work.
  • Special exposures: livestock, commodities, crop concerns, vehicles, or other items needing separate discussion.

Ask what falls outside the current proposal.

Do not treat a farmowners policy as a statement that every agricultural exposure is insured. Ask Todd to identify what the policy addresses and what needs a separate arrangement or specialist. This checklist does not promise a crop, livestock, workers’ compensation, or specialty program.

Finish with a written next-step list.

Record which documents are needed, which questions remain open, and which changes require confirmation. Keep any confirmed effective date with the farm’s records. A website message alone does not add a location, insure machinery, or change an existing policy.

Questions before you start.

Is renewal the only time to review changes?

No. Contact your agent when the operation changes and before assuming a new exposure is covered. Renewal can be another opportunity for a broader review.

Useful resources.

Independent resources provide additional context; they do not imply a government endorsement of Luedtke Insurance.

General information only. Coverage, eligibility, limits, exclusions, and availability depend on the insurer and actual policy. This page does not bind, change, or cancel insurance. Confirm your specific needs with Todd and your insurer.
